Transformation is about ensuring that black South Africans participate more fully in the avocado industry.
SAAGA currently plays its role in transformation through:
- Working with government officials to assist emerging black growers, mainly through study groups.
- Bursaries
- Encouraging mentorship relationships between commercial and emerging farmers.
- Promotion of transformation initiatives carried out by SAAGA members.
- Establishment of 1 ha demonstration orchards.
- Training of government extension officers.
- Assisting emerging farmers, on a cost-sharing basis, to expand to 5 ha of avocados.
- Partnership with RecruitAgri to train agricultural graduates as junior farm and packhouse managers.
- Partnership with entities such as banks and retailers to facilitate integration of black farmers into the formal value chain.
